Synaptic Tips

Many of you may know that a new way of installing applications will be appearing in Ubuntu 9.10 in October. The Ubuntu Software Store will attempt to make it easier for users to install applications. As for Synaptic and Add/Remove these applications may eventually be phased out and an integrated update manager and application manager will take their place. In this post I’ll give a few tips for the people who adore the beloved Synaptic like me.

Gnome Do

Gnome Do in Docky mode is now the first application I install on a new Ubuntu machine as it has blisteringly fast search, combined with a sleek dock to hold your favourite applications. Although a minor annoyance of mine is that sometimes its dock icons do not use the correct icon from your theme or the icons that are used are at a very low resolution. Below is the method I use to fix these low resolution or wrong icons by creating your own .desktop files.
